Just a little St Augustine History... First sighted by the Spanish explorer and treasure hunter Don Juan Ponce de Leon on Easter, March 27, 1513, claimed the land for Spain and named it La Florida, meaning "Land of Flowers". Between 1513 and 1563 the French succeeded in establishing a fort and colony on the St Johns River in 1564, threatening Spain's treasured fleet. Spain's most experienced admiral, Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles, was named governor of Florida. He arrived on August 28, 1565 with 600 soldiers, Feast Day of St Augustine, his objective was to explore and colonized the territory and to drive out any pirates or settlers from other nations. Menendez and his soldiers destroyed the French garrison on the St Johns River, then started building the town, establishing missions to the Indians for the Church and exploring the land.
St Augustine was founded 42 years before the English colony at Jamestown, VA and 55 years before the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock in MA - making it the oldest permanent European settlement on the North American continent.
In 1845, after much turmoil, Florida became the 27th State admitted to the Union. The Castillo de San Marcos was renamed Fort Marion in honor of a Revolutionary War Hero and the capital of East Florida was moved from St Augustine to become part of the state capital in the new town Tallahassee.
In 1885 was the arrival of Henry Flagler (co-founder of Standard Oil Co.) and marked the beginning of a golden era for St Augustine that extended through 1914. Building luxurious lodgings and a fine array of leisure activities. His Florida East Coast Railway ensured a transportation link between New York and St Augustine. In addition, he built the hospital, city hall and several churches. Flagler expanded his dream south toward Palm Beach where he moved in 1900's. His railroad continued to the Keys.
Every day of the week there is something to do in St Augustine, shopping, antique shops to visit, book stores, many restaurants, sightseeing trains, historical sites, carriage rides, ghost tours, helicopter tours and you can't beat the accommodations.
